The useful version
What you need to know.
Ravi, Al Ustad and Aroos Damascus deliver the strongest full-meal value; Arabian Tea House is the most visitor-friendly introduction.
AED 100 is a practical target for one person before delivery fees, premium seafood, large mixed grills or excessive ordering.
Bu Qtair can fit the budget when ordering carefully, but market-priced seafood makes the total less predictable.
The best-value areas include Satwa, Bur Dubai, Deira, Al Muraqqabat and Karama—not only mall food courts.
Ravi Restaurant: the Dubai institution
Ravi in Satwa remains one of the city's defining casual meals: Pakistani curries, dhal, grilled meats, bread and a bill that encourages one extra dish. It is not polished, and polishing it would miss the point. Come with several people so the table can move between something rich, something grilled and something sharp or fresh.
Prices vary by dish and branch, but a focused meal should sit comfortably below AED 100 per person. Ask what is available, order bread as you go and remember that value disappears when enthusiasm produces enough curry for a second family.
Al Ustad and Aroos Damascus: grills with history
Al Ustad Special Kabab in Bur Dubai is the compact Iranian classic: photographs on the walls, sweet-sour marinades, saffron rice and platters built for sharing. It is one of the most satisfying visitor meals near Al Fahidi and the Creek because the atmosphere belongs to the restaurant, not a design agency's interpretation of heritage.
Aroos Damascus in Al Muraqqabat is bigger, later and louder. Syrian mezze, shawarma, grilled meats and enormous salads make it ideal for groups. The menu rewards restraint: order a few cold dishes, bread and one grill, then add only if the table is genuinely still hungry.
Arabian Tea House: easy Emirati entry point
Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi costs more than the most functional cafeterias, but the courtyard, location and clear Emirati breakfast platters make it unusually useful for first-time visitors. It turns a meal into part of an Old Dubai morning without turning heritage into a gold-leaf theme.
Breakfast is the smart play: eggs, breads, beans, cheese, dates and tea can build a generous meal while keeping the spend controlled. Go early, particularly in cooler months, and combine it with Al Fahidi, the abra and the spice and textile souks rather than crossing the city for one isolated plate.
Bu Qtair: seafood with a small warning
Bu Qtair by Jumeirah Fishing Harbour is famous for uncomplicated fried fish, prawns, curry and paratha. Visit Dubai describes it as part of the city's culinary history, and the waterside setting still makes it feel distinct from the resort restaurants further down the coast.
Seafood pricing and appetite can push the bill beyond AED 100, especially with prawns or a larger fish. Ask the price before ordering and treat the threshold as a planning tool rather than a legal contract. If a spectacular catch takes the meal to AED 120, the internet will survive.
How to eat cheaply without eating badly
Order family-style, drink water, avoid delivery mark-ups and choose restaurants whose core menu is affordable rather than chasing a discount at an expensive venue. Lunch specials can help, but the city's long-running value restaurants are compelling precisely because the normal price is fair.
Use the metro where practical and group your meals geographically. A AED 45 lunch followed by a AED 90 taxi mission is not budget dining; it is creative accounting. Satwa, Bur Dubai and Deira each reward a walk, a little curiosity and the confidence to enter the busy room rather than the empty one with the larger sign.
Straight answers
Frequently asked questions.
Can you eat well in Dubai for under AED 100?
Yes. Pakistani, Iranian, Syrian, Indian, Filipino and Emirati casual restaurants make it easy to eat a substantial meal below AED 100. Seafood and tourist-district terraces require more careful ordering.
What is the best area for cheap food in Dubai?
Satwa, Bur Dubai, Deira, Al Muraqqabat and Karama contain a dense range of good-value independent restaurants. Choose an area and explore several nearby stops rather than commuting between individual viral dishes.
Is cheap food in Dubai cash only?
Many restaurants accept cards, but small cafeterias and older venues can have minimums or payment quirks. Carrying some dirhams is sensible, and it is polite to confirm before ordering.
